What if managing disease is not the same thing as restoring health?
In this episode of Everyday Ancestral, I sit down with Dr. Ben Edwards, a family physician who grew up watching his grandfathers serve entire small-town communities. He followed in their footsteps, went through conventional medical training, became chief resident, and eventually became the country doctor he had always imagined himself becoming.
But after years of seeing 40 to 50 patients a day, prescribing more medications, and rarely seeing people actually get better, Ben began questioning whether something was missing. A surprising experience with his own nurse practitioner opened the door to nutrition, lifestyle, the microbiome, and a completely different way of thinking about health. Today, his work focuses heavily on education and helping people become more informed participants in their own health decisions
Why This Matters to You
Doing everything your doctor tells you but still not feeling well? Ben’s turning point came when he realized that much of his training had focused on diagnosing conditions and managing symptoms. He began asking a different question: what inputs does the body need in order to function well in the first place?
Overwhelmed by supplements, biohacks, and complicated wellness protocols? Ben repeatedly brings the conversation back to four basic areas: nutrition, hydration, movement, and peace. His argument is that these foundations should come before adding more complexity.
Feeding your family plenty of calories but wondering whether they are truly nourished? Ben distinguishes between being calorie-sufficient and nutrient-sufficient. He encourages families to prioritize what he calls “deep nutrition,” including organ meats, fermented foods, bone broth, raw dairy, and fresh-milled grains, based on individual preferences and circumstances.
Watching screens replace family connection? One of Ben’s first recommendations for households is surprisingly simple: turn off the devices, return to the table, and listen to each other. He sees community and connection as part of health, not something separate from it.
Making health decisions from fear? Ben encourages people to recognize when fear has entered the decision-making process, pause, educate themselves, and seek clarity before choosing their next step. His goal is not to make people anti-doctor, but to help them become more informed and engaged in their own care.
Actionable Advice
Rebuild the basics first. Focus on nutrition, hydration, movement, and peace before assuming you need another supplement, gadget, or complicated protocol.
Bring your family back to the table. Turn off the devices, share a meal, and make room for real conversation. Listen to what your children and spouse are actually trying to tell you.
Increase nutrient density gradually. Ben recommends introducing more nutrient-dense traditional foods over time rather than trying to overhaul everything overnight.
Reduce sugar-sweetened drinks. For parents looking for one practical starting point, Ben suggests gradually reducing sodas, sports drinks, and other high-sugar beverages.
Create boundaries around screens. Try a screen-free evening, a phone-free family walk, or another simple boundary that creates more room for movement, nature, and connection.
Ben’s journey began with a very conventional dream. He wanted to become the small-town country doctor his grandfathers had been. He achieved it, making house calls, caring for families across generations, working at football games, nursing homes, and the county jail. But the volume-driven medical system eventually left him questioning why he was prescribing more while seeing so little improvement. That tension pushed him to explore nutrition, lifestyle, and other approaches he had barely encountered in medical school. Today, he runs Veritas Medical and a virtual wellness education platform designed to help people better understand and steward their own health.
